The strategic goal of SATNET is “Poverty
Reduction in the Rwenzori Region”.
In the pursuit of our strategic goal, SATNET
has the following objectives:
1. To create public awareness on sustainable
agriculture and related fields:
2. To enhance capacity of member organizations
to deliver quality services to the communities
3. To enhance networking amongst her organizations
and other stake holders
4. To influence formulation and implementation
of appropriate sustainable agricultural policies
5. To widen the knowledge and information base
in sustainable agriculture and other related
areas through research.
Activities carried out by SATNET
1. Capacity building.
- Baseline survey & data base creation
for MOs, trainers register etc
- Organizational development - financial management
system development, strategic planning, Monitoring
& Evaluation systems.
- Supporting Member organizations to become
Centers of excellence.
- Financial support to trainers for specialized
courses in sustainable agriculture and Community
Development.
2. Research and technology transfer
- Research in Herbal and Local medicinal plant
for example Artemisia tea therapy as cheap alternative
for Malaria control.
- Research in sustainable organic pest and disease
management and alternative crop species.
- Soil testing and weather prediction.
3. Lobbying and Advocacy
- SATNET under takes lobbying and advocacy
on policies that empower and improve farmers’
conditions. Example is the Maize Farmers advocacy
aiming at protecting maize farmers from the
neglect and adverse effects of price volatility
in the maize sector.
- Campaign for NO to DDT whilst promoting alternatives
to DDT for malaria control in Uganda and the
Rwenzori region in particular. Various cheap,
sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives
to malaria control have been suggested.
For sustainable agriculture and natural resource
management, the public understood and refused
to the risks that Internal Residual Spray (IRS)
using DDT will pose. At national level we are
working with National Organic Movement of Uganda
and other partners to protect the niche markets
for organic products
4. Information, documentation and dissemination
- Alternatives to Malaria without DDT campaign
materials,
- Translation of maize campaign materials into
policy briefs in two local languages
- Radio programmes on Organic farming through
NOGAMU)
- Reports and newsletters and posters
- Training technical guides
5. Agribusiness
- Supporting Marketing initiatives at their
different growth and variety of agriculture
enterprises. Honey Processing /Alpine Honey
Processing, Fruit juice processing and solar
drying, wet processing of coffee, Cooperative
& micro finance, Fruit Juice and wine making
6. Addressing Cross cutting issues
by mainstreaming
With support from our partners, we have reached
different levels in mainstreaming the following
cross cutting issues;
- Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS –With support
form Concern World Wide.
- Gender Mainstreaming.
- Mainstreaming Public health- Malaria control
through promotion of alternatives to DDT.
- Mainstreaming Environmental conservation-Rwenzori
mountains National park conservation: we work
with local partners under - Global environment
